Hey sweet, a new video.
I thought you died or something. Great job, guy.
good bad….?
1:10 – Wow, just wow…
The fact that so many people have protested against SDIF is just sad.
This video was touching.
“Never go back to the way it was before…”
Beautiful.
On a side note: LOL @ bald Konami!
great video, this hypocrisy is extremely tired and i’m over the ignorance of the majority of the media. .
@ryanjm
Movies too are supposed to be FUN. This is a non-argument. You said: “A movie is an experience that entertains”. Well, that’s interesting, because:
[[Entertain]] = to hold the attention of pleasantly or agreeably; divert; amuse.
[[Fun]] = something that provides mirth or amusement, enjoyment.
Wtf? You said the same thing with two different words. A good movie *is* fun. It can be fun because it makes you think, because you thrill, because it makes you sad … But it’s fun, nonetheless.
Once again,THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you,Daniel!!!
This is probably one of the most insightful and powerful critiques about the video game industry that I’ve seen in a very long time. Daniel and James, I salute you both.
This video is brillant, period.
I see what you’re saying ryanjm, but i would like to see more games attempt a serious tone. I’m a little sick of everything being so forumlaic and empty. Companies are getting lazy, they aren’t hiring quality story writers and on the whole they aren’t taking many narrative risks. But even a “serious” war game is not something i’d be too excited about. There are far too many war games as it is. Any other genre though, and I’d applaud it. Plus the game looks like propaganda.
You are sooo DAMN right. I’m 27 and a “gamer”.
That’s my life and I chose it and love it.
Games are a great medium and IMO have mover expressive power than movies. Treat them with at least equal respect!!
If Activision and Infinity Ward can make a game where you take part in a TERRORST SHOOTING IN AN AIRPORT, then making a game showing what soldiers actually go through is by far less than controversial. The entire Call of Duty series of games, except Modern Warfare 1 & 2 is all about shining our own apples for beating the Nazis.
james has no arms
Don’t listen to people on the news. They only put things up there that will keep people around for the commercial break. If that means putting, “Your child is becoming an obese killer and a pervert because of the games they play. See why after the break.” on there, they will.
Fun is one element of a game. You may not have been paying full attention to the video if you cannot see that games can be so much more than that (and, in some past instances have when the risk was taken). A re-branding is a fantastic idea that unfortunately will never happen. I remember playing through Silent Hill 2, having fun the entire time, because of what it conveyed. Fear, hopelessness, thrills, chills, and then utter and complete heartbreak. Why can’t a game about war do the same?
the talk show host girl looks like a total bitchy whore
that looks like a fun gta game
I just hope that everyone could see this
5stars !!!
I am always astounded by your lectures, they both make me laugh and educate me a great deal, often without me realizing the latter until several days later. This lecture in particular struck me, as this is a problem that is becoming more and more pronounced the longer I watch the industry flounder. I hope you get a wider and wider viewer base, may people could benefit from this.
Bravo!!! Great video Floyd, and James words really got to the point!
I have no problem imagining Schindler’s List as a fun game.
Think outside the point-collecting-box. What is inherently “fun” about watching the movie can be represented interactively without diminishing the gravity of the story.
Another great insight from someone in the industry. Bravo!
very good points. I enjoyed it thoroughly
I think it`s crappy that the game was shit-canned because of a little controversy, but I also think the maker of this video is missing a key difference between movies, art, and games: A movie is an experience that entertains through the use of an interesting story. It can be funny, sad, action-packed, etc… But games are supposed to be FUN. If you take war, and make it fun, it`s difficult to be taken as seriously as those other two forms of art.
Imagine Schindler’s List as a fun game…
